The Sports World & Cannabis Use

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Sporting events are famous for the partying culture which surrounds them. Even though the pandemic has prevented mass gatherings in stadiums, fans often choose to get together and enjoy watching their team of choice competes while enjoying a party atmosphere. While the role alcohol plays in this ritual is indisputable, it seems smoking marijuana is the latest addition to the day’s events.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]A recent survey conducted among over 1,600 sports fans showed that 35% of all sports fans smoke marijuana while watching a sporting event, whether live or remotely. While this may not surprise sports fans, many were curious to hear which sport boasted the highest number of weed-smoking fans.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

UFC & Cannabis

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]In first place came fans of mixed martial arts and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, with slightly above 41% of fans reporting that they smoked weed while enjoying a match. This percentage came above that of any other sport, and fans of the game attribute this to the athletes’ likelihood of consuming marijuana. As UFC commentator Joe Rogan noted on his podcast that:”the weird thing about martial arts, a tremendous amount of UFC fighters smoke pot.”[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The UFC has recently announced that positive THC tests would no longer disqualify athletes from competing without evidence that the drug had been taken for performance-enhancing purposes.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The accepting stance of both the athletes and the fans may explain how UFC comes first in the race for the highest percentage of weed-smoking fans. Still, surprisingly esports came in as a close second, following on the UFC’s heels with a whopping 40% of fans admitting to smoking marijuana as spectators.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

NFL & Cannabis

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The sport coming in third with 36% of fans admitting to consuming marijuana while enjoying a game was the NFL. Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens fans were most likely to smoke pot during a game, with 77% of both fan bases reporting to doing so. The lowest percentage of fans consuming marijuana during a game was the New England Patriots, with only 31%.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

NBA & Cannabis

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The following sports in the survey were the NBA with 35% of fans partaking in marijuana, the NHL with 33%, and Major League Baseball with 30%. The NCAA sported the lowest percentage of fans admitting to marijuana consumption with 29%.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Sports Fans & Cannabis

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The survey also revealed some interesting statistics on sports fans’ preferred methods for ingesting marijuana. Respondents were allowed to select more than one option if relevant. Smoking joints or bowls were the most popular consumption method, with each claiming 42% and 41% of fans, respectively. Bongs and blunts followed with 34%, with edibles (32%), one-hitters (24%), and tinctures (21%) coming in behind them. Vape pens came last, with only 16% of fans claiming it as their preferred method.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

The survey also revealed that sports fans consumed an average of two grams of weed while spectating a game or sporting event.
